History
The story of Burés is the story of a family—a company brought to life by a man with a name and surname: Oleguer Burés Fàbregas. His vision for the future, entrepreneurial drive, and the efforts he shared with his wife, Amparo Pastor Marcos, and his children, Silvia and Oleguer, have shaped the story of a business with a past, a present, and a bright future, one that traces its origins to the mid-20th century.
It all began with a horse-drawn cart selling fruits and vegetables at the Born de Barcelona Market in 1954. Drawing on that experience, he launched his business venture in 1965 under the name Oleguer Burés, supplying soil and organic fertilizers—a mixture of soil, manure, and pine bark to nursery owners, vegetable growers, and plant nurseries in the Baix Llobregat region, as well as to private gardeners, with the masia Valent Petit serving as its headquarters—the site where Cerdà de Barcelona is located today.

1965
The Beginnings
Oleguer Burés Fàbregas began his business by supplying soil and organic fertilizers made from a mixture of soil, manure, and pine bark. During the 1920s, Oleguer Burés Utgés, his father, mixed crushed pine bark with manure to create the growing medium for the vegetable seedlings at his farmhouse, Casa Valent Petit (located on Plaça Cerdà de Barcelona), which he sold at the central fruit and vegetable market in El Born.
1970
First packaged soils from the Burés brand
Oleguer Burés Fàbregas begins distributing the products in 25-kg (30-liter) bags.
The launch of such a small bag—unprecedented in Spain—was met with some skepticism by the gardening industry due to its small size and light weight, but they will eventually win over the general public.
The product was first packaged in esparto grass and then in heat-sealed plastic. These were the first batches of Burés soil to be packaged, marking the starting point for the consolidation of a production and sales structure that would continue to evolve year after year.
1973
Land Expansion in Sant Boi de Llobregat
To meet the new demands resulting from the commercial success of the new bags, in 1973 the company acquired a 20,000 m³ property in Sant Boi de Llobregat (Barcelona). Nine years later, Camp Joan became Burés’s main operations center. In 1990, Camp Joan II was acquired, followed by Cal Cantí in 1997, and finally, in 2004, the adjacent property, bringing the total to 155,000 square meters and providing the most modern packaging facilities and infrastructure for the production of potting soils and growing media.
1977
Premiere at Iberflora
Since its inception, Burés has been committed to promoting its brand at trade shows and exhibitions to showcase its latest products on a national and European level. One such event is Iberflora, the International Plant and Flower Fair in Valencia, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2021. Burés showcases all of the season’s new products, as well as its advertising and marketing campaigns, with the goal of improving customer service.

Grand Opening of the First Garden Center
Oleguer Burés decided to open a garden center with Amparo Pastor, who would take charge of the business. VALENT PETIT—named in memory of the Burés family farm—is located on Badal Street in Barcelona and was later expanded to include a 1,500-square-meter outdoor area dedicated to the retail sale of plants, flowers, and gardening supplies.
1982
Burés Becomes a Corporation (S.A.)
The final step toward becoming a major business is when the company is incorporated. From that point on, BURÉS S.A. (with its founding shareholders Oleguer Burés Fàbregas, Amparo Pastor Marcos, Silvia Burés Pastor, and Oleguer Burés Pastor) decided to establish an expansive structure that would continue to grow.
1983
Acquisition of PRODEASA
In 1983, the Burés family purchased the shares of PRODUCTOS ENERGÉTICOS Y ABONOS SA (PRODEASA), a company located in Vilablareix (Girona), which was engaged in the recycling of wood by-products used for fuel in ceramic kilns. The facility was converted to focus on the production of clays and growing media for professionals, as well as raw materials, with Burés itself as the main customer, thereby ensuring a steady supply.
1986
Oleguer Burés Pastor Takes the Helm at PRODEASA
The story continues in the Burés family, and Oleguer Burés Pastor takes over PRODEASA (Productos Energéticos y Abonos SA) at just 23 years old, with two employees under his supervision. Currently, Oleguer Burés Pastor manages the various companies that make up Burés, and Vilablareix has become the center of operations.
1989
Opening of the Centre Verd Girona
Centre Verd S.A., a company owned by the Burés and Clarasó families, was established to operate a garden center in Girona. A year later, Burés acquired 100% of the shares. In 1992, Valent Petit joined the company, which was renamed Centre Verd Barcelona. The company also acquired a nursery for ornamental plants and three hectares of experimental fields in Vilobí d’Onyar (Girona).
1997
Launch of BIOMASS TECHNOLOGY and introduction of VERD Recycling
BIOMASS TECHNOLOGY S.L., a forestry company, began operations in 1997 on a plot of land in Aiguaviva (Girona) to operate a volcanic gravel quarry. That same year, the company Burés acquired machinery for shredding plant waste and launched a division dedicated to the comprehensive treatment and composting of garden pruning waste under the name Verd Recycling. PRODEASA launched a composting plant for the management and recovery of organic waste in Girona. In 1999, PRODEASA purchased a plot of land in Castelló d’Empúries (Girona) to build a new composting and green waste treatment plant.
1998
Acquisition of SICOSA Chemical Industries
In 1998, PRODEASA and Burés acquired Industrias Químicas SICOSA S.A., a company specializing in the manufacture of organic and organomineral fertilizers and the sale of peat, soluble fertilizers, and products for green spaces.
SICOSA, founded in the 1960s, was the first company to manufacture and market humic acids in Spain. By that time, SICOSA had expanded its product line to include several product families. At that time, SICOSA held a leading position in the manufacture of organic fertilizers with products such as Vigorhumus, Soluplant, Kelamix, and Cultivator.
1998
Incorporation of the Subsidiary EDAFO Gestión Medioambiental S.A.
The company’s mission is to manage organic waste from industrial, agricultural, urban, forestry, and animal sources in order to transform it into resources and improve soil quality through agricultural applications, compost production, etc.
2003
Acquisition of the Cal Dalmau estate in Rajadell
Burés Profesional is expanding its operations in forestry and agricultural management by acquiring a property in the province of Bages, in Rajadell.
2004
Oleguer Burés Fàbregas, Founder of BURÉS, Has Died
After a four-year battle with a serious illness, Oleguer Burés Fàbregas lost his fight and leaves behind a great legacy. The companies BURÉS SA and BURÉS PROFESIONAL SA are now pursuing separate paths, both in terms of ownership and business operations. Consequently, BURÉS PROFESIONAL SA has joined forces with other companies under the BIOT umbrella and continues along the same lines as in previous years, with the exception that the Burés brand has been replaced by BIOT.
2006
Acquisition of ABOTRANS SA
Abotrans is a production facility for organic fertilizers derived from animal and plant sources, located in Escarabajosa de Cabezas (Segovia), an area with an abundance of raw materials for fertilizer production.
2010
Purchase of shares in Burés S.A.
Between 2009 and 2010, 100% of the shares of Burés, S.A., a company located in Sant Boi, were acquired. The company owned the Camp Joan and Cal Cantí properties, totaling more than 155,000 square meters.
2017
Opening of the new Centre Verd in Salt (Girona)
After nearly 30 years at Centre Verd in Girona, the land lease has expired, and the new location has been established in Salt, near the highway entrance. The new facility spans 12,000 m² and features a greenhouse with plants and gardening supplies, a flower shop, tools and equipment, and a large pet section.

Purchase of a pruning waste crushing plant in Castelldefels
Burés acquires the Castelldefels pruning branch composting plant from Metrocompost.
