BURÉS PROFESIONAL, S.A., has developed the “Heather Biofilter” product using a mixture of heather in various particle sizes, followed by further processing at the plant to produce a material capable of absorbing odor-causing compounds and other pollutants from the exhaust air stream. Free-living microorganisms that naturally proliferate on this organic material use these compounds as a source of nutrients and energy through aerobic decomposition.

This product is made from 100% plant biomass derived from heather; it is highly efficient and has a long service life, and is sourced from landscaping and forest clearing activities.

The heather used by Burés PROFESIONAL, S.A., is characterized by growing in environments without significant amounts of grasses or other vegetation, and, in addition to having high porosity—which provides a large surface area for contact with the exhaust airflow—heather is used to create a support framework for filling with soft organic materials, primarily peat.
It is important to note that the valuable part of heather as a biofilter is the wood, not the leaves.
Heather can be used successfully in both open and closed biofilters, although its use as the sole component of the biofilter bed limits its application to situations involving low odor intensities and low-to-moderate gas flow rates.

Applications and Uses

Simple technology that is inexpensive to install and operate. Biofilters that require virtually no maintenance.
High efficiency in removing VOCs and odorous compounds.
Controlling odor pollution helps control vectors (flies, rodents, etc.). The biofiltration process results in the complete breakdown of pollutants, creating non-hazardous byproducts.
The material used in the biofilter is organic, non-toxic, and biodegradable through composting once it has reached the end of its useful life.

Application Tips

CONTROL PARAMETERS

Appropriate physical and chemical conditions must be created and maintained to allow the microbiota to proliferate on the bed material. The essential parameters are temperature, pH, humidity, and nutrient levels.
It is recommended to maintain the operating temperature at around 30°C.
The residence time for heather-based biofilters will depend on the design conditions, but for low concentrations, a minimum standard residence time of 60 seconds should be considered.
The performance and service life of the biofilter depend on the type of contaminant and its mass load, but for heather, an average of >5 years can be assumed. After this period, the used material can simply be composted at our facilities without any special treatment.
