Perlite is a mineral of volcanic origin that, due to its properties, has the ability to expand at high temperatures. The water trapped inside the perlite particles causes the mineral to expand when heated, giving it its lightness. Expanded perlite is a product with a pH close to neutral and very low electrical conductivity; it is very lightweight and highly porous. When used in growing media mixtures, it lightens the medium and increases its aeration capacity.
